    New Motorola Rumors: Split Phone

Motorola SplitGranted that we all just saw the award winning Motorola Backflip at the last CES held in Vegas, it would not be surprising to see Motorola coming with another mobile phone that ventures out into new ground in the style and form department. Take the Motorola Milestone for example, many would say it’s a conventional touch screen slider phone with a physical keyboard.

Well, it is, and at the same time, the phone is the quintessential slider phone with its sleek form and futuristic style (a combination of lines, color and shape). The Backflip takes the whole clamshell concept and totally reinvents it.

So when we are looking at allegedly leaked images of the “Motorola Split” we are really inclined to believe that this might just be the real thing. The images are simple; they show a work in progress mock of the device’s casing, showing how the device would look and more importantly, how it folds out. The “split” in the name is referring to the keyboard which is actually split into two parts.

Users would be sliding the two halves of the keyboard from the sides creating a pretty long mobile phone. Ergonomically; this might not be as sound as it looks. Having the screen in the center creates a center of gravity at the edges of the fingers (assuming you hold a half of the keyboard on the palm of your hand). Then again, it might just work since the thumbs will have full access to the keys (much like a video game controller).

The image shows the Split with a form factor not unlike the Milestone (or DROID in the US). What is interesting is that the rumor leaks also state that AT&T (in the US) will be the first to release the device.

Motorola Unveils MC3090-Z, Their New RFID Reader

Motorola RFID-ReaderMotorola has announced the MC3090-Z, a remarkable RFID or Radio Frequency Identification Reader device. The handheld radio frequency reader could prove to be the lightest industrial product available in the markets, based roughly on the design of MC3000, an earlier Motorola release. The device is significant as it features the very first dual-axis antenna, which is a new innovation in the industry, which can make the device function easily in business set-ups like retail and healthcare.

Michael Liard, ABI’s RFID practice director, expected the device to do well in a market that was really in need of a device of its kind. He remarked that as the user activity grows around RFID, it is of significant importance that such handheld devices are being introduced, which will add to the interest in passive UHF readers as handheld devices. He believed that the flexibility the MC3090-Z could offer will help meet the new challenges and requirements in the market.

The features of the Motorola MC3090-Z include bar code scanning, orientation-sensitive data capturing through an omni-directional antenna, which can help businesses with operations like asset-tracking, cycle counting and other inventory related tasks. The device supports Gen 2 technology, and its durable design can enable it to sustain a drop from the height of four feet on surfaces as hard as concrete without damage. Furthermore, the device is IP54 sealed, the device can easily survive spills and allow you to wipe it clean if you’re working in a dusty environment.

Mike Poldino, the vice president and GM of RFID at Motorola, remarked during the launch that Motorola has lived up to its promise of delivering high-quality and accurate devices that catered to the market requirements, enabling more users to use the technology for the benefit of their businesses, and setting new standards of technological innovation in the industry.

The North American users should expect this brand new RFID reading device hitting their markets sometime in the first quarter of 2010, as announced by Motorola. They further announced that the device will become available around the world later in the year.

Motorola Sholes As XT701 In China

Motorola SholesThere are corroborated indications that Motorola is seriously working hard to release some new mobile device that will be powered by Google’s Android Operating System. One of the devices set for release is the Motorola Sholes Tablet and even though there have been several photos of the device captured earlier, there are now more glaring pictures available to users. However there are strong indications that the device will be released for to the Chinese market as ‘XT701’.

Pictures of the device were leaked on Androlin.net and were straight away followed by comprehensive details on the specifications of the mobile device. Such details include the fact that the device will boast of a 3.7 in touch screen display, It will also have sport FM radio and brandishes a 5 Mega Pixel photo snapper (this is in sharp contrast to the widely spread rumour which showcased the device with a 8 Mega Pixel camera). The device is also said to run under Google’s Android 2.1 Operating System.

There are however no justifications for the rumour that the device will possess a HDM1 port but the fact that the device will be released to the Chinese market is nonetheless accurate. Motorola Sholes Tablet as widely called will be named XT701 in the Chinese market which hitherto reminds one of China Mobile’s Motorola Android device.

In a related development, it was observed that an unnamed Motorola device has been leaked and its pictures have been spotted. The information about the leak was gotten from BGR which confirmed the rather appealing specs of this device. It is expected to be very fast with its 800MHz processor and 8 Mega Pixel camera.

    Motorola Milestone Sim-Free Release Date

Motorola MILESTONEThere is a great likelihood that Motorola Milestone would be released in the UK before the end of the year but would be released in a Sim-Free Version based on the reports gathered from a group of online retailers.

Expansys, usually the first point of call for mobile phone lovers, has already confirmed that the Android 2.0 fully equipped mobile device will be launched on the 7th of December, this year. It was also confirmed that the retailer price for the device will be £449.99 although Sim-free. We also discovered that Clove had been taking pre-orders for this Android device at £424.35 and also scheduled to release the device on the same day.

There is really nothing official to hold on to as Motorola themselves haven’t confirmed the speculation that the Milestone will be debuting in the UK Market. Although the said device had been launched in Germany earlier in the month yet the launch of other monolithic devices launched with O2 and Vodafone also confirms the fact that no one can say with certainty the definite date of launch in the UK market.

It was even discovered that Motorola had gone as far as denying the existence this Android device on their UK site. There are succinct suggestions that Motorola is expecting the launch the device in a big and proper way.

I would seriously expect Motorola to release the device in a big way with lots of freebies for users in connection with mobile operator. There are serious indications that a Sim-free launch is plausible in December while the release with mobile network is expected before the end of the first quarter of next year.

    Motorola Milestone Lands in Germany

Motorola MILESTONE 2German Android fans are getting first dibs on Android 2.0 Éclair as Motorola’s DROID finally hits German shores. The phone, now renamed as Milestone provides users with a large capacitive touch screen display with multi touch, a physical keyboard, and the much awaited Android 2.0 Eclair.

When the Motorola DROID was first announced, it was considered as a US-carrier exclusive device and many were disappointed that the DROID would not make it to the UK. Motorola later announced that they would indeed be localizing the device in the UK and are renaming it as the Milestone. The device will be similar to the DROID in many aspects, but with a few slight changes. The first announced and confirmed change is that the touch screen is now multi touch and will respond to pinch commands (among others).

Motorola Milestone is using the new Google Android 2.0 Éclair (which follows the more commonly used version 1.6 Donut). This is the main reason why many Android fans are awaiting this phone, being the first device with the 2.0 Éclair available, the Milestone has been on the spotlight of many reviewers since it was first announced.

The smart phone is out in Germany right now and it is available for 1 Euro on a two year 20 Euro contract. Despite the device not being SIM locked, the locked contract makes that a moot feature. Without Google Maps support in Germany, users are encouraged to try out Motorola’s proprietary MOTONAV app. Vodafone has announced that they will be carrying the Milestone though they have yet to confirm when the device will be launched under their name.

While the device itself has yet to actually be available in the United Kingdom, its arrival in Germany means that it is only a matter of time before everyone gets to try out the Android 2.0 Éclair.
